Nisia Old Vine Verdejo is a 100% Verdejo white wine from the D.O. Rueda appellation in Castilla y León, Spain, produced by Bodegas Vatan under the Jorge Ordoñez Selections portfolio. The wine is sourced from a collection of small, ancient vineyard plots located in the southeastern subzone of Rueda — the highest-altitude zone in the appellation — situated across the villages of Santiuste de San Juan Bautista, Codorniz, Aldeanueva del Codonal, and Rueda in the province of Segovia. Most vines were planted between 1900 and 1956, with the oldest averaging well over 60 years of age.
The vineyards are cultivated entirely by hand using traditional dry-farming techniques. Vines are trained in the traditional goblet (vaso) system and grown in extremely poor alluvial sandy soils derived from ancient riverbeds. These sandy soils naturally resist phylloxera, allowing most vines to remain ungrafted. The high elevation creates extreme continental conditions with dramatic day-to-night temperature swings that preserve the wine's freshness and aromatic complexity.
Grapes are rigorously sorted and destemmed before gentle pneumatic pressing. The clarified must undergoes cold settling for 24–48 hours before being transferred to 500L and 600L French oak puncheons and demi-muids for fermentation. Primary fermentation lasts approximately 6–10 days. The wine is then aged on the lees with battonage for a minimum of five months in those same French oak barrels, building texture and depth while retaining bright acidity.
In the glass, Nisia Old Vine Verdejo offers aromas of white peach and grapefruit with a mouthfeel that is rich and full-bodied yet lively and fresh. The wine has earned consistent critical acclaim, including 89 points from Wine Enthusiast, 90 points from Vinous, and more recently 93 points from Tim Atkin and 92 points from both Vinous and Guía Gourmets for the 2024 vintage.
