Wente Vineyards Riva Ranch Pinot Noir is an estate single-vineyard wine sourced from the Wente family's Riva Ranch vineyard in the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County, California. The vineyard was first planted by Karl L. Wente in 1961 after he recognized the region's exceptional potential โ cool coastal breezes, an extended growing season, and gravelly loam soils rich in shale and limestone deposits that deliver excellent drainage and concentrated mineral flavors.
Arroyo Seco's unique microclimate, situated near the mouth of the canyon between Big Sur and the Salinas Valley, produces smaller, more intense berries with focused flavors. The cool days and cold nights are ideal for Pinot Noir, contributing to the variety's signature bright acidity and silky structure. The 2022 vintage earned 93 points from Wine Enthusiast, with reviewer Matt Kettmann noting light color in the glass, brisk pomegranate aromas, a tightly wound palate of red fruit, and warm baking spice elements that suggest reliable aging potential.
The wine opens with aromas of ripe black cherries, briary currants, and an integrated layer of toasty oak spice with hints of baked cinnamon and chestnut. On the palate, supple and rounded tannins combine with juicy acidity to keep the wine balanced from front to back. This is a 750ml bottle, sold as a case of 12.
