Banfi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is a prestigious Italian red wine made from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown in the storied vineyards of Montalcino in southern Tuscany. This magnum format (1.5L) bottle showcases the culmination of over three decades of Castello Banfi's pioneering research on Sangiovese clones. The wine is released in the fifth year after harvest and aged for a minimum of four years, including two years in oak barrels of various sizes, mainly French oak barriques and partly in Slavonian oak casks.
The bouquet is ethereal, featuring violet, vanilla, and hints of licorice. On the palate, the wine is round, fleshy, and succulent, exuding black cherry, blackberry, violet, and rosemary flavors with notes of dried roses, cocoa powder, red tea, hazelnut skins, cherries, plum stones, and sandalwood. Full-bodied with very finely-knit tannins and zippy acidity, it combines power and energy with a glycerol feel, fine balance, and harmony. The structure is powerful, with a consistent tannic texture well balanced by pleasant acidity, delivering a long, fruity, savory, and minerally aftertaste.
This elegant Brunello is crafted from grapes grown in stony, calcareous, well-structured soil at 720 feet above sea level. With 14% alcohol content, 5.0 g/l total acidity, and 0.5 g/l residual sugar, it pairs perfectly with red meats, wild game, and aged cheeses, making it ideal as a meditation wine. The 2018-2020 vintages have received critical acclaim with scores ranging from 91-95 points from leading wine publications.
