Maquis Lien is an elegant Chilean red blend produced by Viña Maquis, a family-owned winery in the Colchagua Valley that has been in the Hurtado family for over a century. The name "Lien" means "silver metal" in the native Mapuche language, a reference to colonial Spanish coins melted to make fine jewelry — a nod reflected in the label's distinctive lizard design.
The wine is a blend of approximately 46% Cabernet Franc, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 18% Carménère. Production involves hand-sorting the ripest grapes, followed by 12 months of aging in French oak barrels. The winery's approach emphasizes balance, avoiding both over-ripeness and under-ripe "green" flavors. Sold individually or in cases of 6 or 12 bottles (750 ml each).
On the nose, the wine opens with aromas of fresh raspberry, petrichor, ripe plum, dark cherry, and a hint of amaretto, layered with floral notes of sage and rosemary and pronounced black tobacco. On the palate, lively acidity reveals crème de cassis, graphite, dark fruit, and chocolate with a spicy, balanced finish. Rated 94 points by James Suckling.
