Skylar Rae cherries are a premium proprietary variety grown in Washington State, believed to have originated from a cross between a Rainier cherry and a Sweetheart cherry. They share the distinctive yellow-red blush coloring of Rainiers but stand apart with a thicker outer skin that delivers a satisfying, firm bite rarely found in light-colored cherry varieties. That thicker skin also makes them significantly more resistant to bruising than Rainiers, ensuring better quality from orchard to table.
The variety was discovered in 2004 by Jack Toftness at Tip Top Orchards in Wenatchee Heights, Washington. He named the cherry after his granddaughter, Skylar Rae, in her memory. Stemilt and CMI Orchards are the primary distributors of this sought-after variety. Skylar Rae cherries are a seasonal specialty, typically available from late June through late July—roughly a month during the Washington cherry harvest season. This 2-pound package delivers a generous portion of these exceptional cherries, perfect for snacking, fruit bowls, desserts, or gifting.
