This 6-inch potted orchid garden features a live Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) plant, one of the most popular and beginner-friendly orchids available. Known for their elegant, butterfly-shaped blooms, Phalaenopsis orchids produce flowers in a wide range of colors including pinks, purples, whites, and yellows, displayed on graceful arching spikes above broad, flat leaves. Blooms can last for several months, making this an excellent choice for home décor or as a thoughtful gift.
Place the orchid in a bright, indirect light location such as an east-facing window or behind a sheer curtain in a south- or west-facing window. Avoid direct afternoon sun on the leaves. Water every 10–14 days by allowing water to run through the potting medium and out the drainage holes, and let the bark or moss dry out between waterings. Orchids prefer slightly dry conditions over soggy soil. For added humidity, set the pot on a tray of pebbles and water, keeping the bottom of the pot above the water line. Fertilize a couple of times in spring and summer with an orchid-specific fertilizer. After flowering, cut the spent spike at its base; the plant typically reblooms once a year, often in late winter or early spring. Repot every one to two years using fresh orchid bark or sphagnum moss when the existing medium begins to break down.
