Valdicava Madonna del Piano Riserva Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is a highly acclaimed single-vineyard Italian red wine produced by Tenuta Valdicava in the Montosoli area north of Montalcino, Tuscany. Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes sourced exclusively from the historic Madonna del Piano vineyard, this Riserva represents the pinnacle of Valdicava's output and was one of the very first single-vineyard Brunellos ever produced. Third-generation owner Vincenzo Abbruzzese farms without chemical pesticides or fertilizers, crafting up to 6,000 cases annually with meticulous attention to quality.
As a Riserva, this wine is aged an additional year beyond the standard Brunello di Montalcino requirements before release, resulting in a wine of exceptional structure and longevity. The family began bottling under their own label in 1977, having previously supplied fruit to prestigious local wineries including Biondi-Santi. The wine consistently earns elite critical scores across vintages, including a perfect 100 points from James Suckling for the 2010 vintage, 99 points from James Suckling and 98 points from Wine Spectator for the 2016 vintage, and Wine Spectator's Top 100 recognition.
On the nose, the wine typically shows fresh violet, cherry, and sandalwood aromas. The palate is full-bodied with very fine, focused tannins alongside flavors of cherry, raspberry, iron, eucalyptus, anise, truffle, and spice. The finish is long and mineral-driven. Best enjoyed with a long decant and paired with slow-braised meats in herbal tomato sauce or other rich, flavor-forward dishes featuring beef or venison. The wine has significant aging potential, often drinking best from five or more years after release.
