Intrinsic Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold Washington State red wine sourced from Columbia Valley, with a significant portion of the fruit coming from vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills appellation and the Beverly Vineyard. The wine is crafted by winemaker Juan Munoz Oca and produced by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. The blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 90-94%) with Cabernet Franc and occasional Malbec rounding out the composition. It carries 14.5% alcohol by volume.
What sets Intrinsic apart is its signature extended maceration process — while a typical Washington Cabernet macerates on grape skins for about one month, 50% of this wine undergoes maceration for up to 9 months. This prolonged skin contact draws out deeper color, richer tannins, and more complex flavors — the "intrinsic" qualities of the grapes, hence the wine's name. An additional 50% of the blend is aged in older French oak for 12 months, and a portion is aged in concrete tanks, adding further layers of texture and subtlety.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby color with a vibrant nose of juicy cherry, blackberry, and spice. On the palate it is full-bodied with flavors of cherry, boysenberry, raspberry, black plum, and leather, followed by secondary notes of mocha, balsamic, vanilla, and savory herbs. The finish is long and lingering with pleasant depth. It has earned 91 Points and a Top Pick designation from CostcoWineBlog and a Highly Recommended rating from Reverse Wine Snob, making it an outstanding value in Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon.
