Free State of Jones is a 2016 historical epic drama directed by Gary Ross and starring Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Keri Russell, and Brendan Gleeson. The film tells the true story of Newton Knight, a Mississippi farmer and Confederate medic who becomes disillusioned with the Civil War after his nephew's death in battle. Returning home and facing desertion charges, Knight joins forces with enslaved people hiding in the swamps and disaffected local farmers to lead a rebellion that established a rogue county — the "Free State of Jones" — in defiance of the Confederacy.
