Alfred Gratien Brut is an acclaimed non-vintage Champagne from the house of Alfred Gratien, founded in 1864 in Épernay, Champagne, France. Sold as a case of six 750ml bottles, this wine represents one of the most traditional and distinctive houses in all of Champagne. The blend is composed of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes, fermented and matured in small oak barriques — a rare technique in Champagne — before extended aging on the lees for four or more years, well beyond the legal minimum of fifteen months.
The wine pours a pale yellow with lively, fine bubbles that rise to a persistent, delicate mousse. The nose is moderately intense and complex, offering aromas of sweet pastry, biscuit, orchard fruit, citrus, white flowers, and fresh butter. On the palate it is silky and sparkling, with chalky minerality and a smooth, characterful texture. Rich flavors of yellow peach, dried apple, preserved lemon, and hazelnut are firmed by chiseled acidity and a creamy finish. The finish is crisp, long (six to eight seconds), and balanced, with a pleasing interplay of acidity and residual sugar that is undeniably pleasing on the palate.
Alfred Gratien has earned professional scores of 93 points from both Wine Spectator and James Suckling. The house's legacy rests on its cellar master tradition, passed down through the Jaeger family since 1905. Current cellar master Nicolas Jaeger has overseen production since 2007, continuing a four-generation craft of handcrafted Champagne excellence.
