La Dame de Montrose is the prestigious second wine of Château Montrose, one of the most storied estates in Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux. Originally created in 1983 as a tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who guided Château Montrose through the difficult post-war years, this wine offers a refined expression of the appellation at an accessible price point relative to the Grand Vin.
The wine is a classic Bordeaux blend dominated by Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc rounding out the blend. Depending on vintage, the Merlot content can reach 71%, lending the wine a lush, approachable character with layers of ripe black and red fruits, dark chocolate, tobacco, cedar, and earthy minerality. The élevage typically involves 12 months in French oak, with a portion of new barrels. Tannins are supple and well-integrated, making the wine approachable upon release while possessing the structure to age gracefully for a decade or more.
Critics have consistently awarded La Dame de Montrose scores in the low-to-mid 90s across major vintages. The wine regularly draws comparisons to classified growths, praised for its complexity, elegance, and Saint-Estèphe typicity. It is sealed with natural cork and contains approximately 13–14.5% alcohol by volume, depending on vintage.
