Costco's U-6 Black Tiger Shrimp are exceptionally large farm-raised shrimp sold whole with the head and shell on, priced per pound from the fresh seafood counter. The "U-6" designation means there are fewer than 6 shrimp per pound, making these among the largest shrimp commercially available — ideal for grilling, broiling, butterflying, or serving as an impressive centerpiece entrée.
Black Tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) are prized for their firm, meaty texture and mildly sweet flavor. The dark tiger-stripe pattern on the shell gives them their distinctive name. Selling them whole with the head on preserves maximum flavor and moisture, particularly when grilling or steaming. The shells can be used to make rich, flavorful seafood stock.
These shrimp are farm raised and previously frozen, then thawed for display in the fresh meat section. They are distributed by Kirkland Signature and sourced primarily from aquaculture farms in Asia. As with all previously frozen seafood, they should be used promptly after purchase and not refrozen.
