Marcarini's "Ciabot Camerano" Barbera d'Alba DOC is a classic Piedmontese red from one of La Morra's most historic estates. Made from 100% Barbera grapes grown across 2 hectares of calcareous clay vineyards in La Morra and Neviglie at 300–380 meters elevation, this wine has been produced since the 1960s under the guidance of the Marcarini family and winemaker Valter Bonetti. Annual production is approximately 15,000 bottles, and the wine is harvested in late September.
Fermented in stainless steel and concrete at controlled temperatures, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation before aging 9 months in large Slavonian oak casks (25 hl) followed by 9 months in stainless steel, giving it structure without overwhelming oak influence. It presents an intense garnet-ruby color with aromas of ripe red cherry, blueberry, dried herbs, thyme, and bay leaf. The palate is full-bodied with bright natural acidity, supple tannins, and a long dry finish with hints of cedar and licorice. Alcohol is 13.5% by volume.
Rated 92 points by Ian D'Agata (2021), 91 by James Suckling (2021), and 90 by Wine Enthusiast (2020). Best enjoyed at 14–16°C alongside braised beef, game, aged cheese, pasta, or roasted meats. Suitable for drinking now or cellaring 3–8 years.
