Wairau River Estate Pinot Noir is a premium red wine from the Marlborough region of New Zealand's South Island. Established in 1978, the Rose family estate vineyards are situated on the banks of the Wairau River (pronounced "why-row"), making them pioneers in Marlborough winemaking. The estate draws fruit from five family vineyards along the northern side of the Wairau Valley: Home Block, Crusher, Old Renwick, The Angler, and Katuna.
The wine is crafted from 100% Pinot Noir grapes harvested in the cool hours of the morning to retain vibrancy and focus. Gentle destemming is followed by cold maceration pre-fermentation with gentle hand plunging to extract color and tannins. The wine is then matured in French oak barriques prior to blending and bottling, imparting subtle toasty oak complexity.
This 750ml bottle presents a deep violet color with lifted aromas of ripe cherry and spice, followed by rich savory complexity. On the palate, concentrated raspberry and red cherry notes are supported by hints of wild berries and bramble, framed by subtle, elegant tannins that provide structure and depth. Alcohol content is 13%. The wine is highly rated on Vivino with a 3.8 out of 5 from over 2,000 reviews, and multiple Gold medal winner at New Zealand wine competitions. Pairs well with beef, veal, poultry, game meats, and charcuterie boards. Contains sulfites.
