Disaronno Originale is Italy's most popular amaretto liqueur, crafted in Saronno, Lombardy since 1525. Despite its distinctive almond taste, the liqueur contains no almonds or nuts but derives its characteristic flavor from an infusion of apricot kernel oil combined with absolute alcohol, burnt sugar, and the pure essence of seventeen selected herbs and fruits. This recipe has remained unchanged for nearly 500 years.
The liqueur has 28% alcohol by volume (56 proof) and is nut-free, gluten-free, and kosher. It features rich notes of marzipan, toasted almonds, vanilla, and apricots with a velvety smooth texture. The amber color comes from caramelized sugar with no artificial additives. Disaronno delivers a pungent and alluring aroma of bitter almond, marzipan, and cake icing sugar, followed by flavors of macaroon, madeira cake, vanilla, lemon zest, and toasted almonds. The finish is long with sweet toasted almond and marzipan notes balanced by a faint toasty bitterness.
The product is presented in a distinctive square dimpled bottle with faceted glass design created by master craftsmen from Murano, complemented by a square cap and golden label. According to legend, the recipe was first created in 1525 by a young innkeeper who posed as a model for artist Bernardino Luini's portrait of the Madonna in the Chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Saronno.
