Wild-caught Alaska black cod fillets, also known as sablefish, are premium whitefish prized for their rich, buttery flavor and velvety texture. These fillets are sold by the pound and have been previously frozen to preserve freshness. Black cod is a bottom-dwelling fish harvested at extreme depths primarily through longlining and pot-fishing.
Black cod has exceptionally high oil content making it unctuous and difficult to overcook. The meat is flaky, succulent, and intensely flavorful with a melt-in-your-mouth quality that has earned it the nickname "butterfish." This versatile fish takes well to marinades, sauces, and smoking, and can be prepared by sautéing, poaching, roasting, grilling, or pan-searing.
Nutritionally, black cod is a powerhouse of omega-3 fatty acids, containing 1,543mg per 3-ounce serving, the highest content level among commercially harvested Alaska seafoods. Each serving provides 15g of protein, 1.2mcg of vitamin B12 (51% DV), and is an excellent source of vitamin D (over 90% of the recommended daily value). The high levels of DHA and EPA omega-3s support heart health, brain function, reduce inflammation, and are vital nutrients for prenatal and infant development. Black cod is also low in mercury, making it a safer seafood choice.
Alaska sablefish is sustainably managed under U.S. regulations and certified by both Alaska Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Wild sablefish can live over 90 years and undertake migrations of more than 1,000 miles. Alaska has the world's largest sablefish population.
