San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo is a 100% Sangiovese Toscana IGT from the renowned estate in the Gaiole zone of Chianti, Tuscany, Italy. The estate spans 160 hectares with 30.5 hectares under vine, benefiting from a microclimate with dramatic day-to-night temperature fluctuations that concentrate flavors in the fruit.
Percarlo debuted with the 1983 vintage and stands as the estate's most celebrated bottling, operating in what critics describe as Sangiovese's cult realm alongside peers such as Flaccianello and Cepparello. The wine is sourced from low-yielding vines across six cru sites featuring ancient soils of sand, stone, and a clay foundation. Grapes are harvested beyond full maturity to achieve maximum concentration, then undergo an 18-day maceration followed by 20 to 22 months of barrique aging. The wine is bottled unfiltered and rests an additional 6 months in bottle before release. Annual production is approximately 1,600 cases, and in exceptionally difficult vintages the entire harvest may be declassified.
The estate itself has a storied history dating to a medieval monastery before being transformed into a Florentine fortress in the 9th century. The Ricasoli family presided over the estate for centuries before Enrico Martini di Cigala assumed ownership in 1957; it is currently managed by his children Francesco, Luca, and Elisabetta. Recent vintages have earned scores of 94โ97 points from Vinous, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and Wine Spectator, with tasting notes highlighting silky texture, concentrated dark fruit, floral and spice overtones, and a mineral-laden finish with exceptional aging potential.
