A 4-foot bareroot fruit tree packaged in dormant state, ready for planting during winter months. These trees have been excavated from growing fields and transported without soil while dormant, typically arriving with roots protected in moist packing material. Bareroot trees are economical and develop stronger root systems in native soil compared to potted nursery stock.
Plant bareroot trees from January through March while still dormant for best results. Upon arrival, trees should be planted within 48 hours or stored in a cool, dark location with roots kept moist. Before planting, soak roots in water for 1 to 24 hours to rehydrate. Dig a hole 1 foot wide and 1 inch deeper than the root system, fan out roots, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Trees average 30 to 36 inches tall with some branching and will require pruning by about half after planting to ensure stability.
Water weekly for the first two weeks, using slow deep watering rather than daily drips to encourage deep root growth. Apply 3 to 4 inches of mulch around the base, leaving 4 to 6 inches exposed around the trunk to prevent rot. Varieties available at Costco have included peach, nectarine, apricot, plum, apple, and cherry trees suitable for home gardens.
