Forelle pears are a small heirloom variety prized for their extra sweet flavor and distinctive cinnamon-spice notes. Originating in 17th-century Germany, the name "Forelle" means "trout" in German, a nod to the fruit's striking red-blushed, freckled skin that resembles the coloring of a rainbow trout. These compact, bell-shaped pears have a firm, dense, crisp texture and a sweet-tart flavor that sets them apart from softer European varieties.
The green skin ripens to a warm yellow while retaining its signature crimson freckling. Unlike many pear varieties that become soft when ripe, Forelle pears remain pleasantly crunchy and hold their shape well, making them excellent for fresh snacking, fruit salads, and pairing with tart cheeses or cured meats on a charcuterie board.
To ripen, store at room temperature until the skin near the stem yields slightly to gentle pressure. Once ripe, refrigerate to extend freshness for up to several weeks. This 4-pound bag provides a generous supply of this specialty variety, typically sourced from US growers between October and January and from South American growers from March through August.
