12 Linajes Reserva is a premium Tempranillo wine from the Ribera del Duero region in Spain, produced by Bodegas Gormaz, one of the 12 founding members of the Ribera del Duero appellation. The name references the 12 families (lineages) that established this prestigious appellation in 1979.
Crafted from 80- to 100-year-old vines grown at elevations between 2,780 and 3,150 feet in the province of Soria, this wine expresses the unique character of its high-altitude terroir. The grapes come from carefully selected old vines in loamy, predominantly chalky soils. The wine undergoes 25% malolactic fermentation and is aged 24 months in a blend of 70% new French oak, 15% one-year American oak, and 15% two-year American oak, followed by at least 18 months in bottle.
The 2017 vintage presents a cherry red color that is intense and brilliant. The complex and elegant nose features dark fruit, spice, and floral notes with balsamic undertones. On the palate, the wine is smooth, dense, and chewy with a silky, greasy, sweet and full character. Ripe tannins combine with intense balsamic and roasted coffee notes. The finish is very long, dry, grippy, chewy and juicy. The wine has received critical acclaim, with past vintages earning a 94-point Wine Enthusiast rating. It contains 14.5% alcohol and is imported by Vinamericas.
