Orin Swift Cellars "8 Years in the Desert" is a bold, Zinfandel-driven proprietary red blend from California, crafted by renowned winemaker Dave Phinney. The wine's name references the eight-year non-compete agreement Phinney signed after selling his iconic Prisoner brand in 2008, during which he could barely speak the word Zinfandel. That period of creative exile culminated in this expressive homage to the grape.
The blend is built on a foundation of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels with 37% new oak, imparting structure and complexity. At 15.6% ABV, this is a richly concentrated, full-bodied wine with aromas of stewed plums, baked raspberries, and fruitcake, accented by hints of powdered cinnamon, clove oil, tree bark, hoisin, and dusty soil. On the palate, ripe and spicy black and red fruits are supported by chewy tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and earthy.
Sold in a standard 750ml bottle, this wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, braised short ribs, aged cheeses, and hearty pasta dishes. Available at Costco in a 12-bottle case format.
