Fresh shallots are small, elongated members of the onion family with a mild flavor that combines the taste of traditional onions with a hint of garlic. These versatile alliums grow in clusters with 3-6 cloves per bulb, similar to garlic, and feature thin, copper-brown outer skins. Shallots are more concentrated in nutrients than regular onions, providing fiber, protein, and essential minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and copper, along with folate, B vitamins, and vitamins A and C.
Rich in powerful antioxidants like quercetin, kaempferol, and allicin, shallots offer numerous health benefits including supporting heart health, improving blood circulation, reducing inflammation, and potentially lowering blood sugar levels. The organosulfur compounds in shallots have natural antimicrobial properties and may help reduce allergy symptoms by acting as a natural antihistamine. These compounds are released when shallots are crushed or cut, providing their characteristic mild flavor and health-promoting effects.
Shallots are incredibly versatile in cooking and can be used raw in salads, roasted, grilled, caramelized, sautéed, or added to soups, stir-fries, sauces, dressings, and marinades. They are widely featured in French, Thai, Indian, and Indonesian cuisine. For best storage, keep shallots in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place in a mesh or paper bag, where they will stay fresh for 1-2 months. Once cut, refrigerate and use within 7-10 days.
