Doña Paula Estate Malbec is a premium Argentine red wine sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Uco Valley of Mendoza. Ninety percent of the grapes come from the Alluvia vineyard in Gualtallary at 1,350 meters (4,430 feet) above sea level, with the remaining ten percent from Los Indios in El Cepillo at 1,100 meters (3,610 feet). The stony and sandy loam soils, both with high calcareous content, combined with the cold climate and dramatic day-to-night temperature swings, give this wine its distinctive character.
The grapes are hand-picked in early April, gently destemmed without breaking the berries, and subjected to a cold pre-fermentative maceration to preserve primary aromas. Fermentation occurs at low temperatures, followed by a post-fermentation maceration of 15 to 20 days. The wine is then aged for 12 months in first, second, and third-use French oak barrels.
This Malbec displays an intense violet color with aromas of black fruits, violets, and spices, along with mineral and graphite notes. On the palate it offers great balance and freshness with good concentration, medium structure, soft tannins, and a persistent finish. It pairs excellently with grilled meats, steak, and chimichurri dishes. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F). The wine has earned consistent 90–92-point scores from critics including Robert Parker, James Suckling, Tim Atkin, Descorchados, Wine Enthusiast, and Vinous.
