Mark Ryan Winery's Dead Horse is a flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington State's Red Mountain AVA, offered here in a 1.5L magnum format. Dead Horse is one of the winery's two original labels dating back to 1999, with the first vintage sourced from Ciel du Cheval vineyard — whose name translates to "Horse in the Sky," inspiring the label's name.
The wine is a Bordeaux-style blend anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon, with small additions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc to add depth and complexity. The fruit is drawn from Washington's finest Cabernet Sauvignon sites, with the foundation coming from a custom planting at Quintessence Vineyard on Red Mountain, supplemented by fruit from Obelisco, Discovery, and Olsen vineyards. Red Mountain's warm, high-desert climate produces bold, intensely flavored fruit that Mark Ryan coaxes into wines of finesse and elegance.
On the nose, Dead Horse offers lush dark fruit — blackberry, plum, cassis, and red currant — with notes of eucalyptus, tobacco, leather, and cocoa. The palate is dense and layered with blackberry, plum, dark chocolate, hints of slate, and baking spices. The wine is aged for approximately 21 months in new French oak and is built for cellaring, with a drinking window extending well over a decade from vintage. The 1.5L magnum format is ideal for aging and entertaining.
