Dead Horse is one of the winery's two original labels dating back to 1999, with the first vintage sourced from Ciel du Cheval vineyard — whose name translates to "Horse in the Sky," inspiring the label's name.

The wine is a Bordeaux-style blend anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon, with small additions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc to add depth and complexity. The fruit is drawn from Washington's finest Cabernet Sauvignon sites, with the foundation coming from a custom planting at Quintessence Vineyard on Red Mountain, supplemented by fruit from Obelisco, Discovery, and Olsen vineyards. The wine is aged for approximately 21 months in new French oak and is built for cellaring, with a drinking window extending well over a decade from vintage.
