Ohishi Tokubetsu Reserve Whisky is a rare and highly regarded Japanese whisky produced at the Ohishi Distillery, founded in 1872 and nestled in the Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan, near the village of Mizukami and the pristine waters of the Kuma River. The spirit is distilled entirely from rice — including at least 30% gohyakumanishi rice grown on the distillery's own fields — and matured exclusively in ex-sherry casks, lending it a distinctively rich and fruit-forward character.
The Tokubetsu Reserve is a special multi-decade blend drawn from first-fill sherry casks spanning nearly three decades of aging: 29% from 27-year-old casks, 35% from 10-year-old casks, and 36% from 7-year-old casks. Bottled at 40.5% ABV, the whisky offers notes of marzipan, almonds, butterscotch, toffee, vanilla, and dark fruit, with a long citrus finish. It has earned a community rating of 4.3 out of 5 on Distiller.com and a score of 90 from expert reviewers, who describe it as rich, round, and full-bodied — an elegant expression of Japan's rice whisky tradition.
