The Goru 18M is a rich, full-bodied Spanish red wine from the Jumilla Denominación de Origen in southeastern Spain. It is produced by Bodegas Ego, a winery founded in 2011 by husband-and-wife team Santos Ortiz and Ioana Paunescu with a singular focus on crafting outstanding wines from Jumilla's ancient old vine Monastrell grapes.
The vineyards are planted with vines over 50 years old, positioned at elevations above 2,800 feet. This altitude creates a natural cooling effect that tempers the warm continental climate — Jumilla receives more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year — allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and build exceptional complexity and concentration. Low yields from the old vines further intensify the character of the fruit.
After harvest, the wine is aged for 18 months in new French and American oak barrels, integrating tannins and adding layers of vanilla and spice. The Wine Spectator awarded this wine 92 points, calling it "bold yet balanced," with "blackberry and currant flavors that are ripe yet remain fresh, backed by licorice, cocoa, sanguine and blood orange notes" and "muscular tannins that are well-integrated, giving way to a floral finish." James Suckling has also noted its spices and dark fruits complemented by a sweet vanilla note from oak aging. The wine is vegan friendly and carries 15% ABV.
