Ruffino Modus is a Super Tuscan red wine from Tuscany, Italy, first introduced in 1997 as Ruffino's inaugural Supertuscan blend. The name "Modus," derived from Latin for "method" and "measure," reflects the winery's contemporary approach to blending noble grape varieties. This 750 ML bottle features a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot sourced from hillside vineyards near Florence at elevations between 290 and 450 meters, with soils rich in clay, limestone, and silt.
The wine is aged 12 months in barriques and is best served at 18°C (64°F). Ruby red in color, it offers an intensely alluring nose with a complex interplay of blackberry and mature floral notes transitioning into spicy undertones of cinnamon and cloves. On the palate, expect plum flavors with balsamic hints, soft tannins, and impressive structure. It pairs beautifully with game, aged cheeses, duck with olives and pancetta, or beef-stuffed manicotti with Bolognese sauce.
Modus has earned strong critical acclaim, including a 94 from James Suckling (2019 vintage), 92 from Wine Spectator (2018 vintage), and 95 from James Suckling (2016 vintage).
