Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz is one of Australia's most celebrated red wines, first produced in 1959 and originally sourced from the renowned Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley โ a property purchased by Penfolds in 1945. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend drawing from South Australia's finest warm-climate growing areas, including the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, and Clare Valley.
This full-bodied, inky-hued Shiraz displays everything that makes Australian Shiraz iconic: ripe, concentrated dark fruit layered with dark chocolate, mocha, espresso, and pepper spice. The nose opens with generous aromas of plum, blackberry, violets, dried herbs, and umami savory notes, while the palate is rich and luscious with bold yet structured graphite-like tannins and a juicy, energetic acidity. The wine matures for 12 months in American oak hogsheads (7% new), allowing the fruit to remain at the forefront while the oak provides underlying depth. At 14.5% alcohol, the finish is long and persistent, with a fine mineral and shale-like impression.
Bin 28 is approachable upon release but has the structure and depth to cellar for 30 or more years. It pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, slow-braised lamb, aged hard cheeses, and hearty pasta dishes. The 2021 vintage received 97 points from Andrew Caillard MW, 96 points from Ray Jordan, and 95 points from Jamie Goode, with Wine Enthusiast describing it as a "classic Penfolds" that "drinks well now with protein but could cellar for several more years."
