This 3.5 gallon olive tree is a Mediterranean evergreen suitable for both in-ground planting and container cultivation. Olive trees thrive in long, hot, dry summers and cool winters, making them well-adapted for USDA Hardiness Zones 7B-11. They prefer sharply drained, calcareous soil and can tolerate salty, coastal locations. The tree features attractive gray-green foliage and can grow up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide when planted in the ground, though container-grown specimens grow more slowly.
Olive trees require full sun with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth. When grown in containers, use well-draining potting mix with added perlite or coarse sand for drainage. Water deeply when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry, typically 1-2 times per week during the growing season. Fertilize with a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer every 2-4 weeks starting in the second spring. For areas with temperatures below 25°F, bring containers indoors to the sunniest available location.
Olive trees require at least 300 chill hours below 45°F to produce fruit and begin bearing olives after 3-6 years of age. Pruning should begin in the second year to train the tree's shape, removing shoots that bore fruit the previous year while leaving new growth. The tree may be fruiting or fruitless depending on the variety, with popular options including Arbequina (self-fertile, suitable for containers) or ornamental fruitless varieties for Mediterranean landscaping.
