A containerized persimmon tree in a 3.5 gallon pot, ready for planting in your backyard garden or orchard. This fruit tree produces sweet, custard-like persimmons that ripen in the fall, typically from late September through November. The tree thrives in full sun with well-draining soil and can grow to 15-20 feet tall at maturity.
Persimmon trees are low-maintenance and adaptable, tolerating a wide variety of soils with a pH around 6.3-6.8. They are self-pollinating and slow to leaf out in spring, which helps avoid late frost damage. The trees require regular watering during establishment, ideally receiving 36-48 inches per year for optimal fruit production. Once established, they can withstand shorter drought periods but may drop leaves and fruit in extreme conditions.
The tree should be planted in a location that receives 6-8 hours of full sunlight daily. At planting, ensure the graft union sits 4-6 inches above the final soil level. Monthly fertilization with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer during the growing season helps young trees get established. Fruit is borne on branch tips, so selective pruning in the first few years develops balanced structure and strong branches. The tree can be maintained at a manageable height through regular pruning or allowed to grow as a larger specimen tree.
