Frog's Leap Chardonnay "Shale and Stone" is a Napa Valley white wine produced by Frog's Leap Winery, located in Rutherford, Napa Valley. Since their first vintage in 1985, the winery has sourced fruit from the same hillside vineyard of decomposed shale and sandstone in the cool Carneros district, meticulously maintained by the Truchard Family. The Carneros appellation sits at the cooler, southern end of Napa Valley, where marine influence, frequent fog, and wide diurnal temperature swings allow for a long, even growing season that builds flavor at lower sugars while preserving natural acidity.

Winemaking involves up to ten small picks over the course of a month, capturing different ripeness windows across the vineyard. Each successive pick begins fermentation in new French oak barrels for only a handful of days before being racked at the peak of fermentation into concrete tanks, where the wine rests on its lees, untouched, for up to eleven to twelve months. This balance of brief barrel contact and extended sur lie aging yields a Chardonnay with structure and breadth but without heavy oak flavors or buttery notes—a deliberate third path between the two dominant Napa Chardonnay styles.

The wine opens with aromas of ripe apple, quince, and white peach layered with lemon pith, wet stone, and delicate white flowers. On the palate, bright acidity and a taut mineral core frame flavors of citrus, green apple, grapefruit, and lemongrass, with hints of flint and brioche from the extended lees contact. Completely dry, medium-bodied, and classically proportioned, the wine finishes long with stony persistence. It is immediately accessible while having the concentration and structure to develop additional savory, nutty, and textural complexity with several years of cellaring.
