Dekopon mandarins are a premium Japanese citrus variety known for their exceptional sweetness and distinctive appearance. These large mandarins feature a characteristic protruding bump on top and measure 8 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The fruit offers an intensely sweet flavor profile with sugar levels between 13 and 18 degrees Brix and less than 1% citric acid, creating a rich sweetness without the typical tangy undertones of most citrus.
Developed in Japan in 1972 as a hybrid between Kiyomi and ponkan varieties, Dekopon mandarins are seedless with tender, juicy flesh that divides into 10-11 segments. The semi-thick rind features a pebbled texture yet remains easy to peel. After harvesting, the fruit is typically left for 20-40 days to allow citric acid levels to decrease while sugar content increases, resulting in a more appealing taste. The flavor delivers initial sweetness followed by subtle tartness that prevents the fruit from being cloying, with virtually no bitterness or astringency.
This 3-pound bag provides convenient packaging for enjoying this exceptional citrus variety during peak season from January to March.
