Fresh figs are a sweet, teardrop-shaped fruit with edible purple or green skin and pink flesh filled with hundreds of tiny edible seeds. These seasonal fruits are picked fresh and packaged in 2-pound containers, typically containing 12-16 medium figs. Naturally low in calories with about 30 calories per medium fig, figs are fat-free and cholesterol-free while providing essential nutrients including fiber, copper, vitamin B6, potassium, and magnesium.
Fresh figs support digestive health through their prebiotic fiber content, which helps regulate bowel movements and feeds beneficial gut bacteria. They may help improve vascular and heart health, support blood sugar management, and provide antioxidant benefits from their high polyphenol content. The fruit has a mild, naturally sweet taste with natural sugars providing a healthier alternative to snacks with added sugars. Figs can be enjoyed fresh as a snack, added to salads and desserts, used in jams and preserves, or even grilled as an accompaniment to meats.
Common varieties sold at Costco include Brown Turkey and Mission figs. Store-bought figs are often picked before fully ripe to extend shelf life. For best flavor and sweetness, allow figs to ripen at room temperature until they become soft and fragrant. Ripe figs should feel slightly soft when gently pressed and may develop a slightly wrinkled appearance. Each 2-pound package provides approximately one week of fresh fruit for a family when refrigerated after ripening.
