A pack of 5 fresh pummelos, the largest of all citrus fruits and a distant ancestor of the grapefruit. Native to Southeast Asia and beloved in China for thousands of years, the pummelo is now widely grown in subtropical regions and U.S. citrus-producing areas. It is known for its thick, easy-to-peel rind ranging from pale yellow to light green, encasing sweet, firm, mildly juicy flesh that can be white or pink.
Compared to grapefruit, the pummelo is notably sweeter, firmer, and less bitter, making it approachable for those who find grapefruit too tart. The fruit is sometimes called a shaddock, named after the English sea captain who introduced it to the West Indies. Pummelo segments are excellent eaten fresh, added to fruit and green salads, or used in seafood dishes. The thick white pith and skin can also be candied as a traditional Chinese treat.
Select fruit that feels heavy for its size, is blemish-free, and has a fragrant aroma. Store at room temperature for up to one week, or refrigerate for up to two weeks.
