Château Pontet-Canet is a prestigious Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru) estate from the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, France, classified in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. This 3-liter format (double magnum) presents one of the most acclaimed wines in the Médoc, located adjacent to the legendary Château Mouton Rothschild.
The estate is managed by the Tesseron family and is renowned for its pioneering commitment to biodynamic farming — it became the first major Bordeaux producer to earn official organic certification (Agence Bio) in 2010. The vineyards are worked with Postier Breton horses rather than tractors, and all grapes are destemmed by hand. The 81-hectare estate is planted to 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot on deep gravel soils with clay and limestone, with vines averaging 45 years of age.
The wine is vinified in wood vats and concrete tanks, then aged in a combination of 900-liter limestone and gravel amphorae alongside French oak barrels. It is a powerful, concentrated, and tannic Pauillac with characteristic aromas of black currants, cedar, tobacco leaf, dark plums, and earthy minerality. Young vintages benefit from 2–4 hours of decanting and typically reach their peak at 10–15 years of bottle age. Serve at approximately 15.5°C (60°F). Pairs well with veal, lamb, beef, duck, mushrooms, and tuna.
