La Gritona Reposado is a distinctive additive-free blue agave tequila distilled by Melly Barajas and her staff of women at their small family distillery (NOM 1533) in Valle de Guadalupe in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. This tequila is aged for 8 months in used whiskey barrels, which are reused repeatedly to achieve a very light color while imparting subtle barrel characteristics.
The spirit offers a complex and brooding character with notes of caramelized fruit, cooked agave, black pepper, vanilla, ginger, cinnamon, and oak. The nose features agave forward aromas with hay, pepper, faint oak, nutmeg, and vanilla, while some tasters detect floral notes, minerality, citrus like grapefruit and lime, and hints of melon. The palate delivers caramelized agave, vanilla, cinnamon, soft oak, baking spices, and minerals with a creamy mouthfeel. The finish is medium in length with lingering pepper, sweetness, and herbal notes.
The tequila is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in hand-blown bottles made from recycled Mexican Coke bottles. It uses stone or brick ovens for cooking, roller mill extraction, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks, and double distillation in stainless steel pot stills. The production process includes aeration and uses deep well water from the highlands. While the barrel influence is subtle, tasters appreciate its agave-forward profile that maintains freshness and vegetal characteristics more typical of a blanco, making it highly approachable for both tequila enthusiasts and newcomers. It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, as a shot, or in cocktails.
