The 8" Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) is an easy-to-grow succulent houseplant native to South Africa, also known as the money plant or friendship plant. This compact evergreen features thick, glossy, egg-shaped leaves that are green and fleshy, typically edged or tinged with red when grown with sufficient light. The plant stores water in its leaves, stems, and roots, making it extremely drought-tolerant and perfect for busy plant owners who prefer low-maintenance greenery.
Jade plants thrive in bright indirect to direct sunlight, requiring at least 4-6 hours of light daily for optimal growth and the characteristic reddish leaf edges. They prefer well-drained soil and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause leaf drop and stem rot, while proper care results in compact, vigorous growth. With time, jade plants develop a gnarled trunk and tree-like appearance, making them excellent candidates for bonsai or sculptural displays.
Under ideal conditions with bright light and cool fall temperatures, mature jade plants produce tight, rounded clusters of small white or pink star-shaped flowers with a faint sweet scent. The plant is highly tolerant of most indoor temperatures and low humidity, can live for many years while root-bound in the same container, and is remarkably easy to propagate from stem or leaf cuttings that root within a few weeks.
