CasaSmith Porcospino Primitivo is a single-vineyard Washington State red wine crafted by acclaimed winemaker Charles Smith from Northridge Vineyard in the Wahluke Slope AVA. "Porcospino" means porcupine in Italian, reflecting the label's focus on Italian grape varieties grown in Washington State.
Made from 100% Primitivo — the same grape variety as Zinfandel, originating from Puglia, Italy — this wine undergoes native yeast fermentation with 100% whole-berry fermentation and an extended 39-day maceration on skins, then ages for 8 months in neutral French oak tanks on lees. The result is a deeply expressive, structured red wine at 14.5% ABV.
The Wahluke Slope AVA is one of Washington's warmest and driest wine regions, receiving just 6 inches of annual precipitation. Northridge Vineyard sits on loamy fine sand over silica limestone, with higher elevations that produce later ripening, concentrated flavors, and natural minerality. The wine shows aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum, and dried herbs, with earthy campfire and pencil shaving notes. On the palate expect medium-to-full body, firm tannins, bright acidity, and a long, velvety finish.
