Novolin R (Regular Human Insulin Injection USP) is a short-acting insulin used for the management of blood glucose in adults and children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus who require insulin for glycemic control. Manufactured by Novo Nordisk using recombinant DNA technology with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast) as the production organism, Novolin R is a polypeptide hormone with the empirical formula C257H383N65O77S6 and a molecular weight of 5808—structurally identical to naturally occurring human insulin.

Each 10 mL vial contains 100 units of insulin per milliliter (U-100 concentration), providing 1,000 total units per vial. Novolin R is a clear, colorless solution administered by subcutaneous injection approximately 30 minutes before a meal. It has an onset of action of roughly 30 minutes, reaches peak activity between 2.5 and 5 hours after injection, and continues to work for up to 8 hours. This pharmacokinetic profile makes it suitable for mealtime blood sugar control.
