Echinacea purpurea 'Doubledecker' is a unique purple coneflower featuring distinctive two-tiered blooms. This herbaceous perennial displays showy pink flowers with reflexed petals surrounding a dark brown center cone, with a second small tier of shorter pink petals shooting upward from the top of the cone. The unusual double-decker form typically appears beginning in the second growing season, with single coneflowers blooming in the first year.

This hardy, drought-tolerant perennial grows 36 to 40 inches tall with a spread of 24 to 30 inches. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, blooming prolifically from mid to late summer, sometimes with additional sporadic blooms until frost. The plant features sturdy, well-branched stems that do not require staking, clad with medium green, narrow-ovate leaves with serrated margins. Plant bare root #2 size at 1 inch depth, spacing 24 inches apart.

Double Decker Echinacea is excellent for borders, meadows, native plant gardens, wildflower gardens, and cottage gardens. It attracts butterflies and birds (especially goldfinches who feed on the seeds), tolerates heat, humidity, drought, and poor soil conditions. Hardy in zones 3 through 8, this low-maintenance perennial freely self-seeds if seed heads are left in place and typically reblooms without deadheading. The plant may be divided every 4 years when clumps become overcrowded.
