Scharffenberger Brut Rosé Excellence is a non-vintage sparkling wine from Mendocino County in California's North Coast, produced by Scharffenberger Cellars, a winery that has been crafting super-premium sparkling wines in Mendocino since 1981. The wine is made using the traditional méthode traditionnelle (Champagne method), in which wines are individually bottle-fermented before riddling and disgorgement. Grapes are sourced from Scharffenberger's own 120-acre estate vineyards as well as trusted growers throughout Mendocino County.
The blend consists of approximately 54% Pinot Noir and 46% Chardonnay, with 80% of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation and 15% reserve wine incorporated for complexity. A small addition of still red wine (5%) contributes its characteristic pale salmon color. The wine ages for two years on the lees before release, developing its signature creamy texture and nuanced flavor profile. Alcohol by volume is approximately 12%.
Aromas of fresh raspberry jam and wild strawberries rest on a cream-covered pastry base. On the palate, flavors of persimmon, white raspberry, and white peach emerge with taut, lively acidity balanced by touches of spicy maturity and a lingering finish. The wine drinks dry and complex, earning 92 points from Wine Enthusiast and 89 points from Wine Spectator. It is best served chilled between 45–50°F in a flute or tulip glass, and pairs well with smoked salmon, goat cheese, roasted chicken, creamy pasta, and a variety of appetizers and lightly spiced dishes.
