Tears of Llorona is an ultra-premium extra añejo tequila handcrafted from 100% blue agave grown in the volcanic soil surrounding Atotonilco in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Created by master distillers Germán González and Enrique Fonseca, this exceptional spirit is aged for five years in three distinct barrel types including Scotch, Sherry, and Brandy oak barrels, delivering surprising complexity and balance.
The extended aging process results in a profoundly layered tasting experience with aromas of cooked agave, cognac, spicy-sweet oak, vanilla, and caramel. On the palate, flavors of dried cherries, dark chocolate, roasted agave, vanilla, salted caramel, peppery oak heat, and chipotle peppers emerge. The finish is velvety smooth with spicy heat familiar to cognac or scotch enthusiasts. Bottled at 43% ABV to perfectly balance the flavors, this slow, handcrafted process results in a very high rate of osmotic loss known as the "angels' tears."
Each batch is a unique expression custom blended by Master Distiller Enrique Fonseca and strictly limited to 9,000 bottles. The tequila's name draws inspiration from the Mexican legend of La Llorona, "the weeping woman," a timeless tale of loss, passionate love, and resilience. Men's Journal has called it "a sipping tequila of the highest order" and it has earned the moniker "the Pappy Van Winkle of Tequila." Produced at La Tequileña Distillery (NOM 1146) in Tequila, Jalisco.
