The Black Cedar Thuja, botanically known as Thuja occidentalis 'Nigra', is a dense, conical to narrow-pyramidal evergreen tree sold in a #7 container (approximately 5.8 gallons / 21.9 liters). It is one of the most popular arborvitae cultivars for creating natural privacy screens, hedgerows, and windbreaks in residential and commercial landscapes.
This cultivar features flattened sprays of rich, dark green foliage that retain their deep color throughout the year, including winter — a key distinction from other arborvitae varieties that often bronze or yellow in cold months. At maturity, it typically reaches 20–30 feet tall and 5–10 feet wide with a naturally upright, columnar form that requires little to no pruning to maintain its shape.
Black Cedar Thuja thrives in full sun to part shade and grows best in average to medium moisture, well-drained soils with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. It is cold-hardy in USDA Zones 3–7, making it suitable for a wide range of climates across North America. Once established, it is a low-maintenance plant, though it prefers consistent moisture and should be protected from highly exposed, windy locations. It tolerates clay soils, urban conditions, and black walnut proximity.
