El Jolgorio Mexicano is a premium artisanal mezcal crafted by the Cortés family in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico. Produced from 100% Agave Mexicano (also known as Agave rhodacantha or Dobadaan in some communities), this single-variety expression is made by master mezcalero Valentín Cortés using traditional methods passed down through generations. The agave plants are harvested at approximately 10 years of age, pit-roasted in earthen ovens to develop their complex flavors, and milled using a traditional tahona — a mule-drawn stone wheel. The cooked agave is open-air fermented in wooden vats (tinas) before double distillation in copper pot stills. Each 750ml bottle is hand-marked with specific batch details, including the harvest year, edition number, batch code, and the mezcalero behind that expression.
El Jolgorio, meaning "the revelry," takes its name from small festivals held in remote mountain villages throughout Oaxaca celebrating births, deaths, weddings, and saints' days. Founded in 2010, the brand unites a collective of top mezcal-producing families from across Oaxaca's diverse regions. The Mexicano expression is bottled at approximately 47% ABV and presents a balanced, approachable character that showcases the distinctive qualities of this agave variety.
On the nose, this mezcal offers roasted agave, maple, and light vegetal notes. The palate is mid-weight and straightforward with hints of light smoke, citrus, oregano, black pepper, and cinnamon, with fruity undertones of cantaloupe and plum leading to a long, pleasant finish.
