Château Bellefont-Belcier is a prestigious Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé estate located in the commune of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, on the renowned limestone plateau and south slope alongside Château Pavie and Château Larcis-Ducasse. The estate dates to the 18th century, founded by Count Louis-François de Belcier, with the château itself built in 1803. Current owner Peter Kwok (Vignobles K) has overseen significant renovations since acquiring the property in 2017.
The wine is a classic Bordeaux blend composed of approximately 72% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, drawn from 14 hectares of contiguous vines averaging 35 years of age across 28 parcels. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified in concrete tanks, with malolactic fermentation carried out in French oak barrels. The wine is then aged 14 to 18 months in a combination of 30% new French oak barrels, 30% once- or twice-used barrels, and 30% large 40-hectoliter casks, before bottling at the château. Michel Rolland consults on winemaking.
The wine displays a deep garnet-purple color with a floral and spiced bouquet featuring licorice, dark cherry, espresso, and crushed rock. On the palate it is silky and medium- to full-bodied, with polished tannins, vivid red and black fruits, minerality, and a long, fresh finish. Best served at 15.5°C (60°F) and pairs well with lamb, beef, duck, game, mushrooms, and aged cheeses. Suitable for drinking within 10–20 years of vintage; younger vintages benefit from 1–2 hours of decanting. Available at Costco in cases of 6 or 12 bottles.
