Fattoria Le Pupille Poggio Valente is a prestigious single-vineyard Sangiovese from the Maremma region of southern Tuscany, Italy. Produced by Elisabetta Geppetti — known as the "Signora del Morellino" — at her 85-hectare estate, Fattoria Le Pupille, Poggio Valente has been crafted since 1997 and stands as one of the Maremma's most celebrated cru wines. The wine carries an IGT Toscana designation and is made from 100% Sangiovese grown in a 14-hectare southwest-facing single vineyard at Pereta, at elevations of 280–350 metres above sea level.
The vineyard benefits from well-drained sandy soils ideally suited to Sangiovese, with cooling Mediterranean breezes and significant diurnal temperature variation that preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. Grapes are harvested in multiple passes in late September to ensure optimum ripeness. Fermentation takes place over approximately 30 days in stainless steel tanks, followed by 15 months of maturation in 500- and 600-litre French oak tonneaux, preserving the wine's fruit-forward character without imposing heavy oak influence.
On the palate, Poggio Valente offers aromas of ripe Morello cherry, plum, pressed violet, and herbaceous macchia, with notes of liquorice, pomegranate, and a touch of tobacco emerging with air. The tannins are silky and elegant, acidity is fresh and poised, and the finish is long. The wine has significant aging potential, developing further complexity over a decade or more, while remaining approachable upon release with an hour of decanting. It pairs classically with roasted and grilled meats. Alcohol is approximately 14.5% ABV. Each bottle is sealed with a natural cork closure.
