Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is a historic family estate in Châteauneuf du Pape, founded in 1905 and led today by Jean-Paul Daumen. This red wine from France's Southern Rhône Valley is a benchmark expression of the appellation, crafted from a blend of 60% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, 10% Counoise, and 5% Cinsault, sourced from vines averaging 60 to 100 years in age.
The estate's 15 hectares are farmed using biodynamic practices with impressively low yields — often under 20 hectoliters per hectare — delivering wines of remarkable power, purity, and concentration. The grapes are fully destemmed and co-fermented before aging in a combination of foudres and old French oak barrels. The terroir is characterized by rock-strewn, sandy soil ideal for the Southern Rhône climate.
Young vintages benefit from 1 to 3 hours of decanting, and the wine is typically best enjoyed with 4 to 7 years of bottle age, with top vintages aging gracefully for 25 years or more. It pairs beautifully with roasted meats, lamb, duck, game, hearty stews, mushroom pasta, and aged cheeses. Serve at approximately 60°F (15.5°C) to best showcase its freshness and aromatic complexity.
