Babs is a boutique Pinot Noir project by John Wagner of Peake Ranch Winery, sourcing grapes from three premier vineyards within Santa Barbara County โ two in the Santa Rita Hills AVA and one in the Santa Maria AVA. Because the fruit spans multiple AVAs, the wine is labeled under the broader Santa Barbara County appellation. Winemaker Adam Lee brings approximately 40 years of California Pinot Noir experience to the project, with a stated mission to produce high-quality, fairly-priced Pinot Noir. "Babs" is 1950s slang for Barbara, a nod to the wine's Santa Barbara origins.
This Pinot Noir pours a clean, clear garnet with black highlights. The nose offers cherry, dried herbs, fall leaves, black pepper, nutmeg, leather, plum, and a hint of bacon fat. On the palate, it delivers extracted cherry, sharp spice, black tea, licorice, herbs, and ripe juicy plum, with the mid-palate adding orange zest, jammy raspberry, exotic spice, and cranberry. The wine has received scores of 93 points from reviewers who have compared it favorably to bottles in the $65 range. Alcohol content is 15.1%. Each case contains 12 bottles of 750ml.
