Maui onions are sweet onions grown on the upper slopes of Haleakala, a dormant volcano on the island of Maui, Hawaii. These onions are renowned for their exceptional sweetness and lack of sulfur, which gives most onions their sharp taste and tear-producing odor. The bulbs are covered in thin, light yellow to brown papery skin, with crisp, juicy, and firm translucent white flesh. Maui onions have a high sugar and moisture content, making them exceptionally sweet, succulent, crunchy, and mild.
Grown exclusively in Maui's upcountry Kula district on the cooler slopes of Mount Haleakala, these onions are cultivated in unique volcanic soils and are labeled "Kula Grown" to signify their authentic origin. Maui onions are versatile and can be consumed raw in salads, sandwiches, and poke, or cooked through grilling, baking, roasting, sautéing, and steaming. They pair well with grilled meats, fish, avocado, herbs like cilantro and mint, and even sweet elements like pineapple and maple syrup.
Nutritionally, Maui onions contain vitamins B6 and C, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, and folate. They will keep 1-2 months when stored whole in a cool, dry place, or up to four days when sliced and refrigerated.
