Château Faugères is a prestigious Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé estate on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, France, with a history dating back to 1619. Purchased in 2005 by Swiss entrepreneur Silvio Denz, the property was transformed with a state-of-the-art winery designed by renowned architect Mario Botta, completed in 2009. The estate's 49-hectare vineyard benefits from clay and limestone soils on the Saint-Émilion and Castillon plateau, with vines averaging 35 years of age.
The wine is a classic Right Bank Bordeaux blend dominated by Merlot (70–85%), rounded out with Cabernet Franc (10–25%) and a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon (5–9%), varying slightly by vintage. Grapes undergo a 5-day cold soak before whole-berry fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and 14 months of aging in 50% new French oak barrels. The result is a rich, polished wine with aromas of dark cherry, plum, licorice, espresso, and chocolate, with a silky, lush texture and a long, elegant finish.
Critics consistently score Château Faugères in the 90–94-point range across multiple vintages. The wine benefits from 6–8 years of cellaring in strong vintages and reaches peak maturity between 8 and 20 years after harvest. Young vintages should be decanted for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics to open fully. Best served at 60°F (15.5°C), it pairs beautifully with beef, lamb, duck, game, roasted meats, mushroom dishes, and aged cheeses.
